HIMACHAL PRADESH –DHARAMSHALA

Dharamshala is a city in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by cedar forests on the edge of the Himalayas, this hillside city is home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile. The Thekchen Chöling Temple Complex is a spiritual center for Tibetan Buddhism, while the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives houses thousands of precious manuscripts. This is a hill station lying on the spur of the Dhauladhar range about 17 Km north- east of Kangra town. This hill station is wooded with oak and conifer trees and snow capped mountains enfold three sides of the town while the valley stretches in front. The snowline is perhaps more easily accessible at Dharamsala than at any other hill resort and it is possible to make a day's trek to a snow-point after an early morning's start. Dharamsala is also the headquarters of the Kangra district. In and around Dharamsala, one can visit the Kangra Art museum at Kotwali bazar, War memorial, Kunal Pathri temple and tea gardens on way to Kunal Pathri. There is also a beautiful Cricket stadium in the city facing mighty Dhauladhar.

Camping

Camping is perhaps the best way of enjoying the wonders of nature given to Himachal and sharing the warmth of its people. You can carry your own gear along or opt for any one of the several organised camps such as the Boparais Camping Site at Barog, that are pitched in various parts of the State. These camps offer accommodation, catering and variety of activities like hiking, fishing, nature-tours and rafting.

Day Hikes

Just about every destination in Himachal offers the possibility of day hikes where you may leave in the morning and return by evening. Shorter walks are also possible in practically every place. These may not require the elaborate gear of longer treks but certain basic things may be kept in mind—wear a comfortable pair of shoes and if you are taking one of the more rugged paths, then something with a good grip on the ankles is recommended. Carry some water and a little snack. An umbrella or raincoat should also be carried -especially during the monsoons. Also be prepared for little drop in temperature after sundown and wear or carry suitable clothes. Sunscreen lotion, dark glasses and headgear are optional.
